Travel, Silver Lake Basketball League & Instructional Differences
Travel Basketball:
- Travel is for boys and girls in 3rd through 8th grade looking to develop higher level basketball skills in a competitive environment. Tryouts are held and not all players are guaranteed a spot on a team. Games are played against other towns in the area.
Silver Lake Basketball League:
- Silver Lake Basketball League is an in-town league for boys and girls in 2nd through 8th grade looking to develop skills in a less competitive environment than travel. All on-time registrants will be guaranteed a spot on a team and teams will have an “equal playing” time rule. We also strongly encourage travel athletes to participate in our league as coaching is more geared towards the fundamentals while travel coaches are developing plays with the assumption fundamentals are in place.
Instructional Basketball:
- Instructional is an in-town developmental program for boys and girls in Kindergarten and 1st grade. The program focuses on teaching fundamental basketball skills through drills, high repetitions, and positive coaching, while gradually introducing players to scrimmage situations.
Cost
Travel Basketball:
- $275 + the cost of a jersey purchased separately. Tryouts are free.
Silver Lake Basketball League:
- $125, a jersey will be provided, returning players with a jersey will be eligible for a discount. Travel players will also be eligible for a discount if signing up at the same time.
Instructional Basketball:
- $100, a jersey will be provided, returning players with a jersey will be eligible for a discount.
Camps & Clinics:
- These fees will vary depending on length, gym available and other factors. Check the individual registration for more information on this.
Age Guideline
In travel, silver lake basketball league and instructional you must play in your enrolled grade. The SLYB board reserves the right to require proof of enrolled grade, which you can provided from the school district as needed.
Only the SLYB board has the right to make adjustments to this policy based on various factors such as safety concerns or to adjust player numbers in in-house leagues with coordination from the parent(s) as well.
Why don't we allow "playing up" for star athletes in travel? Simply put, we do not feel comfortable cutting a player in a specific grade for another player that is eligible to play in a different grade. First and foremost we are a development program and cutting players is the last option even for travel.

What Size Basketball do I need
Instructional Basketball athletes are given a ball.
All athletes 2nd grade and younger should use a Size 5 (27.5" ball), depending on the child you can also use a Size 4 (26.5") ball as well until they are more accustomed to dribbling.
For 3rd - 6th athletes we recommend a Size 6 ball (28.5") as that is what local travel and in-house leagues use. Girl sizing stops here.
Finally, for boys 7th grade and later we recommend a size 7 ball (29.5").
